Leon Leroy Jacob
Leon Leroy Jacob, 91, Elgin, Iowa, died Friday, March 25, 2011, at Garden View Assisted Living in Monona, Iowa. Leon was born on April 13, 1919, rural Elgin, Iowa, to Alfred and Marie (Miller) Jacob. He attended rural school and graduated from Elgin High School with the class of 1937. After school he worked a time for the Civilian Conservation Corp. and then for the local telephone company.
Leon served in the United States Army during WWII for the Anti-Aircraft, from February of 1942 to November of 1945, when he was honorably discharged. Much of the time while he was in the service, he was a truck driver, although for a time he was a winch operator and unloaded ships in the port of Anchorage.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Siems in Burlington, Iowa, on March 16, 1946. They were the proud parents of six children. Leon and Ruth farmed together on the family farm near Elgin, Iowa, where they raised hogs, beef, dairy cows and chickens.The First Baptist Church in Elgin, Iowa, was always a large part of their lives. Leon served on the finance committee and was a trustee for many years. He was also a Township Trustee and a member of the Elgin Co-op Board. Leon and Ruth retired to Elgin, Iowa, in 1987, where they built their new home.
Leon continued serving his community on the Elgin City Council for eleven years, Elgin City Cemetery Board and was active with the Elgin Historical Society. Leon and Ruth moved to Garden View Assisted Living in Monona, Iowa, in October of 2010.Survivors include his wife, Ruth Jacob, Monona; five children, Mary Ann (Ronald) Stevens, Greeley, CO, Margaret (Roger) Ruetten, Stillwater, MN, Robert Jacob, Postville, Janet Jacob, Postville, Susanne (Michael) Westphal, Colorado Springs, CO; five grandchildren, Julie Stevens, Katrice (Mark) Ziefle, Michael (Kristin) Ruetten, Madison Westphal, Abigail Westphal; two great-grandchildren, Sonja and Wesley Ruetten; two siblings, Alfred (Christabele) Jacobs, Fergus Falls, MN, Elizabeth Schaer, Elgin and many nieces and nephews.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Jacob and two siblings, Lloyd Jacob and Lillian Schroeder.
Those who wish are welcome at the committal service on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. at the Elgin City Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa.
Funeral Services will follow on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Elgin, Iowa. The Rev. Lee Boleyn will officiate.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 28, 2011, from 4-7 p.m. at the Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.
