Peter Putman 1843-1923 Civil War Veteran

Peter Putman was born at Cayuga,
N'. Y., Sept. 4, 1843, and passed away
Friday, Dee. 14, 1923, at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. Frank M. Brown,
Esiherville, Iowa.
- In 1858 Mr. Putman came- to Iowa
and located at Fairbank. From there
on July 15, 1861, he enlisted in the
5th Iowa Regiment, Co. C, and went
to the front. At the expiration of
his term, lie reenlisted in 1864 and
remained in the army until the Confederate
forces surrendered. He
took part in a number of conflicts
of that war, some of them among, the
bloodiest in the war. When the war
was over he received an honorable
discharge and returned to his home
in Iowa. In 1866 he was united in
marriage to Alice S. Teague -who was
born in Yorkshire, England, and preceded
her husband in death in 1916.
Three children were born to this
union, Charles J., who passed away
some years ago, Cora M., wife of
Frank M. Brown, and Clyde, who
passed away in infancy.
Mrs. Frank Brown is the only surviving
child. Three grandchildren.
Vera Hazel Brown, Everett Putman
and Mrs. Allen Fereday also survive
as well as three great grandchildren.
Mr. -Putman descended from a long
line of American ancestors who settled
in the seventeenth century in
various parts of New York. ' Some of
their descendants fought in- the Revolutionary
war and others, among
them the deceased, in the war of the
Rebellion. His was a patriotic record
worthy of our praise who have
entered into the fruitage of the sacrifices
and labors of the men and women
of generations past in the development
of our beloved land.
The services were conducted yesterday
afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev.
Korteling; the W. R. C. also participating.
The interment was at Hazleton.
