Jerome L. Lawrence 1846-1918 Civil War Veteran

- Jerome Leonard Lawrence was born March 26, 1846 in
the state of New York. He came with his parents to Iowa
in 1854 and settled at Volga City, where he grew to
manhood. Being anxious to do his part in the defense of
his country he enlisted in the army in his nineteenth year,
and served until the close of the war with Co. A. 47th Iowa
Infantry.
- After his return from military duty he moved to St. Charles,
Kane County, Illinois where he was married to Miss Julia Fellows.
He afterward moved to Fayette county, Iowa and in 1877 settled
on a farm three miles west of Oelwein, where he continued to
reside until moving to Oelwein. His death occurred October 27,
1918 after a sickness of eight weeks.
- To Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence were born four children who with his
faithful wife, remain to mourn his loss; Mrs. Ala Trumbauer, Center
Iowa; Mrs. Netie VanWirt of Oelwein; Mrs. Myrtle Lawrence of Spring
Valley, Wisconsin and Mrs. Grayce Latimer of Oelwein.
- Funeral ceremonies were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Oct 29, by
Rev. E. H. Gillett; also last rites by the G. A. R. The family and friends
mourn his loss but are comforted by the fact that his battles are
fought and he has entered into rest.
