- John Chase was born in Compton, N.H. on March 29, 1840
and died at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jesse
Chase, in Oelwein on the 2nd day of May 1920. He had
reached the age of 80 years, 1 month and 3 days.
- He grew to manhood in his native state and in the year
1862 he enlisted in Co. K, 39th Massachusetts volunteers.
He transferred to Co. I, 2nd Regiment of Vetern Reserve
corps and served until honorably discharged at Indianapolis,
Indiana on the 3rd of July 1865. His war record was one of
which any man might well be proud.
- Fifty-four years ago, Mr. Chase came to Iowa and took up
his residence in Fayette county.
- On April 22, 1877 he was united in marriage with Mary E.
Conrad of Maynard. Three children were born to them, Jesse S,
who died in Oelwein two years ago; Willis E. who now lives in
Volga City and Frances D. who passed away less than a year ago.
Twenty-two years ago Mr. Chase suffered the loss of his good
wife and for sixteen years he has made his home with his son Jesse,
his daughter-in-law having cheerfully cared for him in his
declining years. One son Willis and 18 grandchildren survive the
passing of this fond parent.
- Mr. Chase has been a member of the G.A.R. for many years and
ever since young he has been a faithful and consistent member of
the Methodist Espiscopal church.
- Funeral services were conducted by Dr. W. C. Cleworth at the
Methodist church in Maynard on Tuesday and interment was made in
the Maynard cemetery.
- Six comrades of the deceased bore the sacred remains to the last
