Eli Rogers 1835-1906 Civil War Veteran

Eli Rogers, an old gentleman well
known in the city, met with a serious
accident Saturday forenoon while
working on the "riff" track of the
C. G. W. railway. A car was "kicked"
down on. the track where he was at
work, striking him and running over
the right ankle and crushing the toes
of the left foot. The left leg was also
badly bruised. This occurred about
10 a. in., and as soon as possible he
was taken to the Pattison Hospital.
The right leg was amputated about a
third of the way to the knee and two
toes were removed from the left foot.
Saturday evening be was removed to
his home.
Mr. Roger's suffered much till Monday
afternoon when be fell
asleep in death. His advanced age
made it impossible for him to survive
the shock of the accident and operations.
The funeral occurred this
Wednesday, afternoon from the Presbyterian
church.
Eli S. C. Rogers was born in Ohio.
December 3. 1835 and was therefore
seventy years, four months and thirteen
days of age. He enlisted as a
private in Company C. 10th Reg. Ill.
Volunteers and served twenty-one
months daring the early years of the
Civil War. In 1865 be was united in
marriage to Miss Amy K. Humphry
and to this union were born six children,
four daughters and two sous,
Delia R.. Lilly M., Marcus S., Ruth M., Nina L.
and Eli W.
Mr. and Mrs. Rogers came to Iowa
thirty-eight years ago and have been
residents of Oelwein for the past seven
years. He was a member of the G. A. R.
and of the Baptist church. Sincere
sympathy is extended to the widow
and children in their bereavement.
