RANDALIA -
John Newton was born in Falkirk,
Sterlingshire Scotland, Nov. 15,
1823, and died at his home near
Randalia, Iowa, Feb. 9, 1910, at the
ripe old age of 86 years, 2 months
and 22 days.
April 1, 1846, he was united in
marriage to Mias Jean Walker, and
to this union ten children were born,
eight of whom are still living. Mrs.
Wm. P . Lewellyn and James Newton
of Randalia, Arch Newton of
Maynard, John Newton of Conway,
Springs, Kansas, P. Newton of
Bronson Kansas, Mrs. Ben Miller of
Raymoore, Missouri, Mrs. Maggie
Serene of Sansarc, South Dakota,
and William Newton, of Kansas.
All but the last named were pres
ent at the funeral service.
In 1849 Mr. Newton and wife left
Scotland and came to America where
they settled in Ohio. In 1862
Mr. Newton enlisted in the Union
Army, but was discharged one year
later on account of sickness About
30 years ago he came to Iowa, and
after five years spent in Decatur
county, moved to Fayette county,
settling on a farm west of town.
Thirty six years ago he was baptized
and united with the church of
the Latter Day Saints.
About a year ago Mr. and Mrs.
Newton went to live with their
daughter, Mrs William Lewellyn
on a farm west of town, and here
his last days were spent amid the
love and care of his family and
friends.
The last services were held from
the Randalia M. E. church, Friday
at 11 o'clock, conducted by the Rev,
A. E. Kernehan, who preached from
the text, " I know that my Redeemer
liveth " Music was furnished
by a quartet. The esteem in which
Mr. Newton was held was visible in
the large number who attended the
last rites and the beautiful floral
pieces presented by the W. R. C ,
the family and other friends. Interment
was made in the Dunham Grove
