Miss Olive Shadle 1864-1906

The last services for Miss Olive
Shadle were held from the Baptist
church of this city Wednesday forenoon
at 10 o'clock, Rev. True officiating.
There were many flowers bestowed,
and it large attendance of relatives
and friends. Interment in the
Oelwein cemetery.
- Miss Shadle was born in Clayton
county, near Volga City, where she
grew to womanhood. She became a
teacher in the public schools. For
thirteen years she was a teacher in the
Le Mars schools, four years in Manchester,
two years in Moulton county,
and a vear in Leeds, South Dakota.
She was a very .successful instructor,
and was much beloved by her pupils
and patrons. Last June, after several
months of illness she gave up her
school work, and went to Cedar Rapids
and to the Presbyterian hospital
for medical treatment. But the disease
could not be eradicated, and
Monday at 10:30 a. m. she peacefully
passed away at the home of her sister,
Mrs. J. Ainsworth, in Cedar Rapids.
-The remains were brought to Oelwein
on the morning train over the
Rock Island. The teachers in the
Leeds, South Dakota, schools sent a
beautiful floral anchor, also a
ajar, as tokens of their high esteem
for the deceased. A beautiful flora
pillow was given by Supt. and Mrs
Bigelow, of Leeds.S. D..and the board
of education of that city sent an
elaborate floral wreath. The Young
People's Society ot LeMars presented a
floral cross. The First Baptist church
of Leeds, sent a large bouquet of carlations.
Other flowers were bestowed
by friends.
- Two sisters. Mrs. G. Ainsworth and
Miss Mary Shadle. and five brothers.
J. H. Shadle of California, J. W., of
Oelwein, J. J., of Chicago, J. A. and
A. J. of Oelwein, are left to mourn
the departed. The parents had preceded
her to the other world. Miss
Shadle was an active member and
worker in the Baptist church, and her
entire life was one of much sweetness
and kindness to her pupils and friends.
- Two of her lady friends from Le Mars,
Miss Jones and Mrs. Clegg, were present,
and sang a duet, "Lead Kindly
Light" at the last service.
