Services Held For Former Area Man; 92
WEST UNION (Special)

Funeral services for Joseph N. Gardner,92, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Burnham-Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Krell, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment
is in West Union cemetery.

Joseph Nicholas Gardner was born Jan. 25, 1868, the son of Babel and Mary Wartham Gardner. His birth place was in the pioneer country of Platte county, Nebraska, near Columbus. He died Octber 14th at Stillwater, Minn.

As a young man Gardner moved to Iowa with his parents and settled east of Williamstown. His early manhood was spent in the Alpha, West Union and Oelwein areas, also at Britt. While in West Union he was a buttermaker at the West Union Creamery, and about 1906 was a drayman.

He married Hattie Mae Jolliffe in 1898, in West Union. To them were born five sons. They also
adopted a son.

The Gardner family moved from West Union to Nerstrand, Minn., in 1906, to Aberdeen and Redfield, S. Dak. and later to Stillwater, Minn. where his death occurred Surviving are three sons, Harold of St. Paul, Minn.; Robert of Clear Lake; Charles of Centum, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; a brother, George of Des Moines; a sister, Bess Luther of Oelwein; nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife in 1943; three sons, Reuben, Lowell and an infant son; 18 brothers and sisters.
