August Benson, who has been sick at his home for some time, passed away Friday morning. Mr. Benson was born in Sweden, April 8, 1845, coming to this country when a young man. He spent most of his life here in Elgin, where he partook in everything of interest to his community. He was at one time Mayor and also held other offices, and was a merchant in West Elgin for many years with his brother Elias. Mr. Benson was one of the charter members of the Masonic Lodge, being a Mason for fifty years. Mr. Benson is survived by his wife, three daughters, and one son, who were all with him at the time of his death. The daughters are Mrs. L. Benedict of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Fred Falb of LaCrosse, Wis., Mrs. Boie Capper of Postville, and his son Oscar Benson of LaSalle, Ill. One brother, Elias Benson of Elgin, and two grandsons, beside a large number of other relatives also survive him. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon, being his 83 birthday anniversary. The services were in charge of the Masonic order, and burial was in the Elgin cemetery.
