Andrew John Maillie was born in Fremont township,
Fayette county, Iowa, January 1, 1890. His parents
were Robert Maillie and Minnie nee Fox.
Andrew as a boy attended the public schools of Sumner
where his father was for many years a buttermaker.
He completed nine years of public school education
and then continued to educate himself by studying
textbooks of various kinds as time went on.
Coming to Oelwein from Sumner in the year 1910, Mr.
Maillie pursued the vocation of pipefitting, plumbing
and heating in this city until the close of World War II,
when ill health forced him to make a change.
On November 2, 1913 Mr. Maillie was married to Minnie
Roepke at First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev.
Maggart. The couple had five children, four sons and a
daughter. On November 2, 1957 they observed their
44th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Maillie was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. F.
Zimmerman shortly after his marriage and remained a
member of Zion Lutheran church, Oelwein. He served
as secretary of the church building committte from
1946 until his death. He also a committee-man of local
Boy Scout Troop 129.
Since the close of World War II he had been custodian of
the post office.
He died Tuesday at 9:23 pm Novenber 19, 1957, shortly
after arrangements were being made to transfer him to
the hospital by ambulance.
Preceding him in death were his only daughter, Elizabeth,
who died at the age of two, and one of his sons, Edwin,
who was killed in New Guinea during World War II.
Surviving are his widow and three sons, William in the Navy;
John, Fair Oaks, California and Louis of Oelwein; also two
brothers, William, Hillsboro, Oregon and James T. of
Waterloo; three sisters, Mrs. Marvin Young, Sumner, Mrs. <
M. L. Scott and Mrs. Will Lutes, both of Brainerd, Minn;
five grandsons and three granddaughers.
Funeral services were held from Zion Lutheran church,
Oelwein on Friday, November 22, 1957, Pastor Paul C. Lutz
officiating. Interment was made at Woodlawn cemetery.Oelwein Daily Register - 25 Nov 1957
