Leon J. Libby, son of James and Eliza Libby came life at Elkader, Clayton county, Iowa on ~
February 14, 1868 his parents moving to Volga
City Iowa when he was four years of age. He grew
to manhood here, having received his education in
public schools and graduating from the High School
there.
After some experience as a clerk in one of the
Volga stores, he went to Deadwood, South Dakota,
taking up and working at the plumbers trade. He has
resided in Oelwein since 1904, being employed for
14 consecutive years by Wells Fargo Co.
He responded to the call for men during the Spanish
American War, enlisting in April and being sent with his
regiment to Chicamagua Park thereby contracted the
fever and rheumatism, suffering all the summer, being
discharged in September, returning to his home to bear
the results of that serious illness all the rest of his life.
Many times bearing great burden of pain and illness, but
bravely enduring, until nine days ago, when he was confined
to his home and from which he could not recover, passing
away on March 6th 1918.
He was united in marriage to Lizzie Steckelberg on February
28, 1906. One son was given them, Little Paul who is four and
one half years of age, he will be the comfort and require the
attention of his mother in her bereavement.
One brother, Fred Libby of Chicago and two sisters, Mrs. Anna
Goodwin and Mrs. Hattie White of Volga remain with his widow
and son to mourn his departure.
He sleeps in Woodlawn cemetery, to which place he was bourne,
accompanied by the sorrowing relatives and friends.
