Mary Doran was born in County
Kilkenny, Ireland, February 12, 1844,
and came to America with her people
at the age of four years, landing in
New York where they remained two
years. In 1850 they came west, locating
in Garnavillo and later in
Volga township for a time, after
which the subject of this sketch was
united in marriage with Patrick
Welch. They located on a farm
north of Elkader in Boardman town-
ship, where Mr. Welch died. In 1897
the family went to Elkader to reside,
but in 1903~ they came to Oelwein
where the deceased departed this life
Friday evening in her sixty-fifth year.
She is survived by two daughters,
Anna and Katie and four sons, Henry,
James, John and Joseph, and a sister
Mrs. Patrick Conley and other relatives.
Funeral services were held in the
Sacred Heart church Monday forenoon,
Rev. P. S. O'Connor officiating, also in
St. Joseph's church in Elkader, Tuesday,
conducted by Rev. R. E. Reilly, her former
pastor. Her children and other kindred
mourn the loss of a good mother and
the abiding sympathy of neighbors and
friends is with them. Peace to her soul
is the wish of all.
