James F. Gallagher was the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Gallagher and born at
Houston, Minnesota March 25, 1878
and was 32 years one month and two
days old at the time of his death.
At the age of seven years he came
to Oelwein with his parents and has
resided here most of the time since.
At the close of his school life he became
associated with the Great Western
and it was while in the service
of this company that he married Miss
Maude Hubbard, of Oelwein, who
now resides at Dexter, Minn, where
he made his last residence.
Some few weeks ago he paid his
parents and relatives here a visit and
went from here to Des Moines where
he was employed..
The accident which caused his
death occurred Wednesday, April 27
at Muscatine, Iowa in the yards of the
Rock Island and C. M. & St. P. The
injured man was immediately taken
to a hospital where everything possible
was done for his recovery and
relief. The remains were brought
here Friday from Muscatine and the
funeral services were held from the
Sacred Heart church, Farther O'Connor
officiating, Saturday at ten o'clock
The surviving members of the
family who are left to mourn his sad
and untimely death are the wife, Mrs.
James F. Hubbard-Gallagher, of Dexter,
Minnesota, who was here in attendance
at the funeral, Mr. and Mrs. Edward
Gallagher, father and foster mother,
Mrs. F. Gallagher Lally and Miss Mayme
Gallagher of St. Paul sisters and three
brothers, Jno. Leo and Dudley E.
Gallagher all of whom were in
attendance at the funeral.
James Gallagher was well and favor-
ably known in Oelwein and for
several years was yard master in the
C. G. W. yards where he was respected
and obeyed by all with whom he came
in contact.
It has been said of him that he was
the best switchman who ever marshalled
a train in Oelwein and it is true that no
man ever accomplished as much from men
under them as did the much admired and
free hearted "Jim".
