Speeding sands of time are continually
counting off the days and years
of man's existence, and one by one
they pass over the borderland of time
to the endless shores of eternity.
Now and then when an old pioneer
passes away, one cannot help but
pause in the mad whirl and rush of
every day existence to contemplate
what great changes time has wrought.
On last Sunday afternoon the earthly
life of John Kint, residing at Coytown,
came to an end and his spirit passed
over the river. Deceased would have
been 82 years of age had he lived until
Thursday, He was born in Westmoreland
county, Pennsylvania, April
8th, 1815, and in later life moved with
his parents to Ohio, and was united
in marriage in that state on March
25th, 1837, his wife being one year
younger than himself. Ten years later,
in 1847, this young couple full of
hope and vigor, turned their faces
westward, crossed the father of waters
and came to Iowa, locating in what
is now Buchanan county. He selected
as his homestead the farm upon which
he has since lived and where he died,
and no one but himself has ever owned
a foot of it since he took its virgin
soil from the hands of the government
fifty years ago. Himself and companion
braved the privations of pioneer
life and enjoyed together the fruitage
of their early labors, in later years and
witnessed the marvelous growth and
development of our young commonwealth.
For over 50 years they journeyed
together on the sea of life, she
having died about two years since.
Five children were born to them, four
of whom are living, being Daniel of
Alpeua, South Dakota, George, of this
city, William, living at Coytown and
Mrs. Peter Young, of Hazleton. all of
whom were present at bis bedside during
his last illness. The funeral services
were held at the farm residence
Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Jacobs, of
Independence,preaching the discourse,
and he was buried in Coytown cemetery.
"After life's fitful fever he
sleeps well."
