Our community was shocked Saturday
morning by the announcement
that Dr. T. J. Cozens was dead. He
bad been in poor health for two
years, but up to about six months ago
only himself and physicians, whom
he consulted really knew that he was
as bad as he was. .For the past .six
months however his condition has
been such as to cause his friends a
great deal of anxiety at times, and
several times it has been feared that
he was near death's door, and yet
when the angel messenger came with
the summons it was so suddenly that
all were startled. All of his children
were not able to reach his bedside
before his spirit had taken its
flight. Mrs. Hale, of Chicago, was
the only one of his children that was
present when he passed away. His
son Charles, also residing in Chicago,
had been informed of his father's
illness, and was on his way here but
failed to reach his bedside until a few
hours after his death. Deceased was
born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, on
the 31st day of October, 1825, and was
therefore 71 years old last October.
For many years he was a practicing
physician in Illinois, near Chicago,
and 19 years ago himself and wife
came to Iowa and located in Oeiwein,
where he has since resided, being engaged
in the practice of medicine up
to the time of his failing health. He
took an active interest in the affairs
of our growing town and was identified
with them, and enjoyed the respect
of all classes of our citizens. He
leaves a wife, one son and two daughters
to mourn his loss. Funeral services
were held at the family home on
west Charles street at three o'clock
Sunday afternoon, being largely attended.
Rev. Ross, of the Christian
church, conducted the services. The
remains were taken to Chicago for
burial and were laid to rest in the
family lot in Graceland cemetery by
the side of two daughters who had
proceeded him. A disease of the kidneys,
peculiar to old age, and a gradual
weakening of the system was the
cause of death. Rev. Ross, who conducted
the funeral services at the
home stated the following facts in regard
to the deceased: Thomas Jefferson
Cozens first saw the light in Bourbon
Co., Ky., on October 31, 1825. In
early life he became a follower of
Christ. On the llth day of September,
1849 he united his fortunes with
Miss N. V. Kane. Five children
came to bless their union. Three reside
in Chicago, while two preceded
him to the spirit land; one at the age
of twenty and the other at seventeen.
For many years Dr. Cozens followed
his profession. For eighteen years
he was a resident of your city, building
up an extensive practice and forming
many warm friendships. He has
gone from us. He said to me on Friday
night March 26th: "I face the inevitable.
But it is all right. At
another time the same night while
suffering intensely for some time:
"This is awful but the Lord knows
best"." On Monday night last he said:
"There is nothing like knowing it is
all right," again, "The Judge of all
the earth will do right." And with
this truth before us we will leave him,
as leave him we must in His hands
who doeth all things well. His companion,
his son and one daughter are
with us today while the other is in
Chicago too unwell to be here. We
are requested to present to all who
have been so kind and helpful, both
in word and deed the gratitude of
those loved ones who are bereft.
The floral offerings were tasty and
included not only those from loved
ones but also from the membership of
the Christian church and Endeavor
