Our people were surprised and shocked
Saturday morning to learn of the
death of E. T. Older, an old and respected
citizen of the 4th ward. As
he was getting well along in years he
had been somewhat feeble but had
been down on the street twice during
Friday. About six o'clock Friday evening
he had been across the street to
one of the neighbors. His wife heard
him come into the kitchen, and a moment
after heard a pail knocked from
the table to the floor and then a shuffling
noise. On going out to see if anything
was the matter she found him
lying partially over the table and not
able to speak. She assisted him to a
chair and summoned assistance. When
a physician arrived it was found that
he had suffered a stroke of paralysis,
his whole right side being paralyzed.
He was partially conscious for about
half an hour and then became unconscious,
in which condition he remained
until his death, between nine and ten
Saturday morning. Deceased was born
in New York February 22, 1822, being
at the time of death, nearly 75 years of
age. Himself and his aged wife, she
who had been his constant companion
and help meet since December 26th,
1844, when they were united in marriage,
came to Iowa from Wisconsin,
in 1856, residing near Independence
one year and in 1857 they removed to
Fremont township, Fayette county,
and settled on a farm near what is now
the village of Westgate, where they
continued to reside for about forty
years, moving to Oelwein two years
ago. Five children were born to them,
four of whom are living. They being
C. W.. residing on the old farm; Mrs.
Innes, living near Westgate; C. E.,
living near Luverne, Minnesota, and
C. H., residing in Dakota. The funeral
services were held in the M. E.
church at Westgate Tuesday afternoon
he having been a member of that
church ever since they settled in the
county, being conducted by Rev. Blodgett
of Maynard, and Rev. Triem of
this city, and were largely attended.
He was buried in the cemetery at
Westgate.
