Mrs. Alva (Susan) Smith 1824-1897

Mrs. Alva Smith, whose death we
briefly noted last week, was born in
Bristol, New York, June 2, 1824, being
at her death over 72 years of age
On June 16, 1847, she was married to
Alva Smith, of Palmer, Massachuetts.
and for nearly fifty years they journeyed
happily together, he being called
to his final rest on April, 24, 1895.
They came west to Rock county, Wisconsin
in 1855, and in 1888 came to
Fayette county and were residents of
Oelwein and vicinity from that date to
the time of their death. Two children,
Mrs. John Pickard and Geo. W.
Smith survive them. The funeral
services were held at the residence of
her son, Thursday afternoon (with
whom she has resided since the death
of her husband) being conducted by
Rev. Conybeare, and the remains were
laid to rest by the side of her husband
in the Oelwein cemetery.
