After an illness of several weeks the
spirit of Mrs. Fletcher Preble took its
flight to the realms above, Sunday
morning, September 19,1897. Mercy
Eleanor O'Neel was born in southern
Indiana December 17, 1847. She was
a daughter of Ruel O'Neel, of this
city. She removed to Iowa with, her
parents when eight years of age, and
has been a resident of Buchanan county
ever since. At the time of her
death she was living about six miles
southwest of the city, just over the
Fayette county line. April 27,1871,
she was united in marriage to Fletcher
Preble. Six children were born to
them, five of whom are living; a little
daughter having preceded her to the
better land. Her husband, five children,
father, two brothers, three sisters,
and a large circle of relatives
and friends mourn her death. The
funeral services were held Tuesday
forenoon, being conducted by Rev. C.
W. Triem, of Oelwein. The burial
took place at Oran cemetery, and the
remains were followed to their final
resting place by a large procession of
friends; who thus paid their last tribute
of respect to the loved one. Early
in life she joined the Baptist church
but about five years ago united with
the Methodist church, and lived a consistent
member to the end.
