James Smith, old settler, died 1894

On Tuesday last, at Fayette was buried James Smith. James Smith was one of Fayette County's oldest settlers having lived in Iowa for the past forty years and thirty-nine years on the farm where he died. It was he whom the township of Smithfield was named after. He was well known to many of our older residents as a man of strict honesty and much ability.
