Mrs. James (Mary A.) Cross 1842-1913

Mary A. Ayers was born in Columbus Junction, Iowa
May 10, 1842 and passed away at her home in this
city, 103 Fourth Avenue South Thursday evening,
June 12, 1913, aged seventy-one years, one month
and two days. She was united in marriage to James
L. Cross at Lanark, Illinois, December 25, 1859 and
they came to Iowa forty-eight years ago and located
near Independence. They moved to Oelwein twenty-
seven years ago.
Three children were born to them. Albert Cross who
died about twenty-three years ago at the age of
eighteen, Edwin Cross and Mrs. Sarah Walker, both
of this city. Her husband died fourteen years ago on
June 15 on the same date as her funeral. Both were
interred on Sunday. Beside her two children she
leaves to mourn her loss two brothers, W. S. Ayers of
this city and J. R. Ayers of Valentine, Nebraska, also a
grandchild, Alfred Walker.
Mrs. Cross had been a Christian Scientist for the past
eighteen years and died in the faith she professed.
The last services were held from the home Sunday
under the direction of her society, First Reader Genia
A. Hill speaking of her as a noble christian wife and
mother. The floral offerings were elaborate.
Interment followed in the old city cemetery by the
side of her husband and son.
