A ghastly tragedy occurred at the
farm home of John Middlestadt north
east of this city and about four miles
southeast of Maynard Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Middlestadt took his own
life by shooting himself, using a shot
gun, and blowing his head off.
The unfortunate man has not been
regarded as sound mentally for some
time, and it is said had threatened to
take his life, but as he seemed to be
harmless it was not thought that he
would do so. Shortly after 12 o'clock
Saturday he went out to the granary,
and placing the muzzle of a short gun
to his face, discharged the weapon.
causing instant death.
His wife, hearing the report, rushed
out to the building. and on entering
saw her husband weltering in his
blood. It was a terrible shock to her.
and kind neighbors saw to the preparations
for the last services which
occurred from the Presbyterian church
in Maynard Monday afternoon, Rev.
Tennison officiating.
John Middlestadt was a man about
thirty seven years of age, and left a
wife and four children, two boys and
two girls. He had led an upright life,
and his sad taking off is sincerely
regretted by his relatives and friends.
