The community was shocked Tuesday morning
to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. A. J. Mettlin
who passed away about 7:30 am. She had been
in her usual health and the announcement of her
death was entirely unexpected. The sympathy of
scores of friends go out to the stricken family
in their sore bereavement.
Ella May Shaw was born in Carroll county, Ohio in
1865 and two years later came with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Shaw to Windsor township
where the family located on a farm about four miles
from West Union. She was educated in the county
school and twelve years ago she was united in
marriage to A. J. Mettlin and came to Oelwein. Two
children were born to this union, Laura and George.
Her father died about six years ago but the mother
lives to survive her youngest child. Four brothers
and three sisters are left to mourn the loss of a
sister. They are Mrs. George Jamison, of this city,
Mrs. R. J. Dickey and Miss Lizzie Shaw of West Union,
E. B. Shaw of West Union, John J. Shaw of Boise City,
Idaho, J. M. Shaw of New Plymouth, Idaho and
N. A. Shaw of this city.
Mrs. Mettlin was member of the Presbyterian Church
and was a loving wife and mother. She was highly
esteemed and loved by her many friends and her death
comes as a sad blow to so many homes in the city. The
funeral will occur Friday at 9:30 o'clock am at the
residence, after which the remains will be taken to
West Union.
