At his home in Clermont, Iowa, Fayette County, on Sunday evening August 23, 1891, Thomas Smith died of apoplexy. The deceased was born in Wicklow, Ireland in 1812 and while a young man of 25, he came to St. Louis, Missouri and later Galena, Illinois, finally locating on a farm in Clermont Township in Fayette County, Iowa where he acquired 240 acres of land. By industry and enterprise, he made a beautiful home for himself and family. Thirty years since, Riley and six children blessed their union. However, only one son and Mrs. Smith survive to mourn the loss of an indulgent husband and father. During a residence of 38 years in this country, Mr. Smith made many warm friends and took an active part in everything, tending to benefit and elevate the condition of his fellowman. He was a truly Christian man. He lived not for himself alone but for all mankind and now "after life's fitful fever he sleeps."
