John Halvorson

Services for John Halvorson were Friday at the West Clermont Lutheran Church. The Rev. Roger Peterson officiated

The organist was Janet Helgerson and the soloist was Clarence Amundson. Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in God's Acres Cemetery.

Casket bearers were John H. Halvorson, Peter Halvorson, Don Cowell, Henry Follett, James Anderson and Joseph Olson. Honorary casket bearers were Dennis Griebenow, John Meyer, Truman Paulson, Louis Schrader, Henry Nelson, Allan Johnson and Henry McMillan.

John Carl Halvorson, son of John Carl and LaNora (Stanton) Halvorson was born July 27, 1919 in Clermont. He died June 9 in the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Iowa City.

He graduated from Clermont High School in 1937. February 17, 1951 he was married to Erma Faye Sparks at Cedar Rapids. The couple had one daughter.

He was employed by the Canada Dry Company in Cedar Rapids and in Texas for several years, and the Rath Packing Company in Waterloo from 1952 until about 1959. They lived in the Clermont area for the past 25 years. He was the postmaster in Clermont from May 8, 1967 until he retired in April of 1973.

Halvorson served in the U. S. Army during W W II with the famous 34th Infantry Division, which had the distinction of being the first to land in the European Theater.

He served overseas for almost 3½ years, earning the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Silver Battle Star, a Bronze Battle Star, six overseas Service Bars and a Service Stripe. He was also with the first Americans to land in Africa with the British Commandos.

He is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Allan Herbert and Stanton Leo, and a grandson, Mark Frooshani.

He is survived by his wife, Erma, daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Mohammad Frooshani) of Bowie, MD, a step-daughter Linda Maxwell of Glendale, AZ, 4 grandchildren, 2 sisters, Maryon (Mrs. John Camp) and Helen (Mrs. Francis Broaddus), both of El Paso, TX and a sister-in-law.

He was a member of the West Clermont Lutheran Church, the American Legion Sheehan Olson Post 375, the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, the Masonic Lodge in Clermont and the Shriners and Consistory of Cedar Rapids, and also, the order of Eastern Star in Elgin.
