The funeral services of Mr. Valentine Kappes were
held yesterday afternoon, August 5, 1934, from the
Kappes home, 142 First Avenue, NW, Rev. J. B.
Ackman of Grace Methodist Church being in charge
of the services. Burial was at the Woodlawn cemetery.

Valentine Kappes was born in Lena, Illinois,
April 18, 1876. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Valentine Kappes Sr. His early education he received
in the Lena Public Schools. When he was twenty-one
years of age, he came with his parents to Iowa, locating
at Oelwein. When the Chicago Great Western Railway
system came to Oelwein, he became one of the first
employees. He was in the employee of the C.G.W. for
a period of thirty three years. About four years ago he
retired from the C.G.W. service because of ill health. In
1929 he had a major operation at Rochester, Minn.,
from which he never fully regained his health. His end
came last Friday, August 3, 1934.

He was united in marriage to Miss Elta Howard,
September 27, 1905. They established their home in
Oelwein. Mr. Kappes was a man who was held in high
esteem by his employers and his comrades in the
service of the railway system. Because of his
brotherliness and cooperation of the other members
of Charles and Valentine Kappes family circles these
two families were privileged to live under the same
roof for a period of almost twenty nine years. He was
a member of the C.G.W. Veterans Association.

He is being survived by his bereaved wife, his
daughter Harriet Kappes Moore, as well as by his
brothers; Henry Kappes of Oelwein, Alfred Kappes of
Aurora, Ill. and his sisters; Mrs. C. J. Coder of Spencer,
Iowa, G. G. Ward and Miss Kate Kappes of Oelwein, as
well as many other relatives and friends who will miss
his fellowship and friendship.
