The funeral services of Mr. Charles Kappes, who
passed away in our city, 142 First Avenue, NW last
Thursday, were held from the Grace Episcopal
Church Rev. J. B. Ackman having charge of the
services, Sunday afternoon. The men of the Hebron
Lodge, No. 374 of the A. F. and A. M. having charge
of the services at the grave. His body was laid to
rest at Woodlawn cemetery.

Charles Kappes, son of Valentine and Melissa
Kappes, was born at Lena, Ill., August 14, 1870. In
this same vacinity he grew to manhood and here he
received his early training.

On October 18, 1904, he united in marriage with
Miss Minnie Howard at Lena, Ill. They set up their
home at Oelwein the same year. For twenty eight
years Mr. Kappes was an employee of the Chicago and
Great Western Railway, in which organization he was
respected and esteemed for what he was and was able
to do.

Since four years ago he has been in ill health. Last
Monday he was delighted for the privilege of going to
Waterloo with his son for a drive. On his way back from
Waterloo he was stricken with a stroke of paralysis from
which he never recovered. His end came quietly last
Thursday afternoon, April 14, 1932.

He was a member of the English Lutheran Church.
He was also a member of the Hebron Lodge No. 374, of
A. F. and A. M. and the Chicago Great Western Veteran's
Association.

He is being survived by his life's companion, Mrs.
Charles Kappes and his son Howard Kappes of Oelwein.
as well as three brothers; Valentin and Henry Kappes
of this city and Alfred of Aurora, Ill.; and three sisters
Mrs. C. J. Coder of Spencer, Iowa, Mrs. C. C. Ward and
Miss Katherine Kappes of Oelwein, as well as many
other relatives and many friends.
