Benjamin A. South was born in Dubuque,
Iowa, December 15, 1838. He

aged 74 years, 1 month and 3 days.
On December 16, 1866, he was married
to Miss Henrietta Bunting. Of
this union seven children were born.
Two died in childhood and the five
remaining to comfort the widowed
mother in her declining years are Mrs.
Claudia Beatty, Roswell, New Mexico,
Mrs. Mary E. Johnson, Portland, Oregon;
Mrs. Naomi Jane Olson, Dearborn,
Missouri; Mrs. Luella Chase, Oelwein, Iowa,
and Robert J. South of Oelwein.
He also leaves one brother, Francis,
of Dubuque, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah
Hickman of Cascade, Iowa.
When the war began in the sixties
Mr. South enlisted in Company K..13th
Iowa, Iowa infantry, and went to the
front to defend his country. He served
with honor till the close of the war
when he returned to his native state
which has been his home ever since.
In the early nineties Mr. South was
converted and united with the Baptist
church of Oelwein of which he
was a member at the time of his death.
Mr. South was a man of Sterling character,
an industrious worker, devoted
to his family and true to his friends.
Just a few days before he passed away
he expressed a willingness to leave
his wife and was confident of being
received by the Savior. This testimony
will help to heal the wound his passing
has left in the hearts of his dear
ones. A large circle of friends sympathize
with the stricken family in this
hour of their sore distress.
