OLD SETTLER PASSED AWAY.
Harry Louis Mathers was born in
Cadix, Ohio, Nov. 2, 1828, and died at
his home In Fayette county near Sumner,
Iowa, Sept. 15, 1911.
He was married to Emily June
Edwards in Columbia, Ind., Jan. 25,
1852, and to to this union was born eight
children, of whom five are living, one
son and four daughters, namely, W.
H, and Julia of this place, Mrs. Anna
Hazen, of Salem, Soutb Dakota; Mrs.
Jessie Rogers, of Pillsger, Minn.;
Mrs. Emily Lafountain, Peoria, Ill.
Before coming to Iowa Mr, Mathers
was a cabinet maker in Crawfordsville,
Ind. He came to this section
In 1858, and took up a claim, the present
homestead, obtaining patent from
the U, S, land office for the same, and.
began living on the place as soon as
he could build a house, and this had
been his home from that time
The funeral was held at Murphy
United Brethren chapel, and Rev.
Hadwen Williams, pastor of the
Methodist church at Sumner preached
the sermon and officiated. Burial was
made in Greenwood cemetery near
the church.
All the surviving children were present
at the funeral and those from away are
still at the homestead.
Mr. Mathers took a prominent part in
the early day life of this section but of
late years has been sadly afflicted with
diseases such as rheumatism and
cancer and had been almost helpless
for some time. Great credit can be given
his son and daughter, Wade and Julia,
for the patient and kindly care taken of
him during his helplessness.
