Michael Winn was born in Drumod,
in the county Leitrim, Ireland, Jan.
10th. 1830. He landed in New York City
July 17th, 1853, his passage across
the ocean having been made in the
sailing vessel John Lang and consuming
eight weeks of time. After awhile
spent in New York state Mr. Winn
came to Iowa, and in 1855 married Mrs.
Ann Devlin, of Dayton Tp., this county,
where he settled down on a farm.
In 1875 he bought and moved to a farm
in Banks Tp., Fayette Co., where he
remained till 1881, when he moved to
Sumner, where the remaining years of
his life was spent excepting the last
year, which he spent in visiting
among his children.
Mr. Winn was all his life a man of
activity and energy, but he was of
rather delicate constitution, and his
advancing age gradually told on him
as the years went by. His wife died
May 4th, 1893, and her death was a
severe blow to his health and happiness.
Since then he underwent two severe
spells of sickness, which enfeebled him
much. He was in his usual delicate
health last week and visiting his son
Edwin at Estherville, when he rather
suddenly became prostrated, and after
three days of lingering his lamp of
life went out at 6:45 o'clock on the
morning of Feb. 1st, 1901.
The funeral was held in the Catholic
church of Estherville, Sunday, Feb.
3rd, Rev. Father Daily officiating.
Two very elaborate and beautiful floral
designs were displayed on the casket,
one the tribute of Ed.'s fellow
Elks, the other of the railway
employees of the B.C. R. & N. under Ed
at Estherville. Monday the remains
were conveyed by rail to Fairbank, accompanied
by his sons, M. E. Winn,
of Estherville, and Jas. Winn, of
Hampton, and deposited by the side of
those of his wife. He was the father of
7 children, those named, Thomas, of
Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Maggie Lutes,
of Florence, Colo., William, recently
deceased, and a daughter that died in
1873 at the age of 13 years. Another
son died in 1875.
Michael Winn was man of warm afections,
very devoted to his family,
most neighborly and accommodating,
honest and upright, and an excellent
citizen. In his death it may truly be
said that a good man has gone to bis
reward, and we believe it will be said
of him ''well done, good and faithful
servant; enter into the joy of thy Lord."
