Ruth Spahr Callan, 96, a resident of Hallmar Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 21, 1989. She born February 28, 1893 near West Union, Iowa. She married Thomas Callan November 6, 1923 in Cedar Rapids. He died in 1963. She was a graduate of Cedar Rapids Business College. An optometrist, she worked for Iowa Optical Company until 1937. She and her husband purchased and operated Creswell Pharmacy in the Kenwood area until 1958. She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church.

Surviving are nephews and nieces, including Cora Palmer* of Waukon, Iowa.

Before entering the nursing home, Mrs. Callan made her home in Waukon with another niece, the late Helen Gruver.*

Funeral services were held Monday november 27 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with the Rev. john McTarsney officiating.Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Stewart Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

* Note from the contributor: For anyone researching Ruth Callan, I do know that Cora Palmer and Helen Gruver were Hendersons who grew up in Fayette County. I do not know the maiden name of their mother, but perhaps it was "SPAHR" --since that is listed with Ruth's name.
