James I. Meighan, 103, died Friday, August 25, 1989 at his home in Fayette, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, August 28 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner, Iowa. The 10:30 a.m. services were conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Stecher and the Rev. Phillip Recker. The 2 p.m. burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa with Becker-Milnes Funeral Home of Sumner in charge of arrangements.

He was born January 19, 1886 in Clinton County, Iowa to Bernard and Margaret (Burke) Meighan. He attended rural school in Clinton County. On November 23, 1908 he married Margaret E. Costello in Petersville, Iowa. She died in 1959. He was a retired farmer and had farmed in Allamakee County from 1946 to 1961. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette.

Surviving are four sons, LeRoy of Oelwein, James of Sterling, IL, Francis of Fayette, and Raymond, of Dewey, AZ; two daughters, Bernice Murphy of Sumner and Geraldine Hyman of Hawkeye, Iowa; 26 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and great-great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four sons, Leonard, Norbert, Robert, and one in infancy, five brothers, Art, Jack, Tom, Bill, and Bernard, and four sisters, Loretta, Margaret, Annie, and Jetta.

Casket bearers were John Hammel, James Troendle, Francis Plein, James Rochford, Dick Allenstein, and Don Kimball.
