Charles W. Hotchkiss was born at
Smithville, Chenango county, N. Y.,
May 12, 1817. His parents were
Sherman H. and Nancy Brooks-
Hotchkiss. He married Miss Maria
Crandall April 27, 1847, and three
years later moved to DeKalb, III.,
where he resided till 1856, when he
came to this county. He was thus
one of the old settlers of this territory.
Nearly all the time since then
has been spent on the farm where he
died, except nine months in Fayette.
Mrs. Hotchkiss survives him as do
also their children, Mrs. Mary Dewey,
Chas. Hotchkiss, Mrs. Sarah Sidler,
and Mrs. Helen Cross. All of
these are residents of this .county.
His death took place Saturday, Feb.
6,1904. He was nearly eighty-seven
years old—a long time for a man to
live who has pioneered in a new
country. He suffered but little and
his death seemed to be a result of
the natural wearing out of physical'
powers rather than active disease.
He was a devout Christian, having
been converted in 1864, at which
time he also joined the Methodist
church. During the last few- years
he was not physically able to attend
public worship, but during his active
days his delight, like the Psalmists,
was in the house of the Lord.
The funeral service was from the
home where he and his family had
lived so many years, and the burial
was at Grand View Cemetery, Fayette.
