A telegram received here Monday
brought a message of sadness and regret
to more than one person in the
city. It announced the death of Henry
J. Fels at Kirksville. Missouri. Mr.
Fels went to Kirksville last September
in quest of health, thinking that climate
might agree with him. Our people,
who had known him so long, hoped
that his fondest dreams in this respect
might be realized. Henry came
to Oelwein in 1876, from Auburn township,
where his parents still reside.
He entered the employ of Jamison
Bros., who were then in the mercantile
business, and remained with them for
many years, rising from one position
of trust to another, in all of which he
was faithful. In later years he -was in
business for himself for a time; but in
every place he enjoyed the confidence
of all who knew him. He was quiet
and unobtrusive in his demeanor but of
a genial disposition. He had not been
in the best of health for a number of
years, having been, troubled with an
affection of the spine, the foundation
of which is thought to have resulted
from injuries received in a base ball
game. His death seems to have been
somewhat sudden as he wrote a letter
to his wife, Saturday, stating that he
was feeling quite well and had been
out for a walk in the afternoon. He i
was about thirty-five years of age, and
leaves a wife. The remains arrived
here Tuesday night, and the funeral
services will be held at the Presbyterian
church this afternoon at 1:30 P. M.,
and will be conducted by Rev. Conybeare.
The remains will be interred
in the cemetery at Maynard.
