A. W. Hockings was born in Burlington,
Wisconsin, March 16, 1856. He
died in Oelwein, Iowa, May 5, 1913,
aged 57 years and 19 days. While still
a small boy he moved with his parents
to a farm, west of Oelwein. Here he
resided till. 1901 when he moved to
his present home in town.
He was married January 1, 1883, to
Miss Emily Hanson. To this union two
children were born. The eldest, Mrs.
Zoe Peters, lived in her father's home.
John is employed with the Rock Island
railway at Horton, Kansas.
These with a large circle of near relatives
mourn Mr. Hockings untimely
departure.
For nearly thirty years he has been
afflicted with heart trouble which was
the immediate cause of his death. He
had taken a decided stand for the
Master. His hope was strong in the
Savior. Owing to the severity of his
affliction he was deterred from taking
the step that would unite him
with the Baptist church, but he was
counted among those who constituted
the church circle of helpers. His
work is well done, and to his delight
his family are all in the Kingdom. His
life was an open book; He was a good
neighbor, an indulgent father and loyal
husband. The family have the sympathy
of all who knew the deceased.
Funeral services were held at the
home in Oelwein, Iowa, at 2:00 p. m.
May 8, 1913. The remains were followed
by a large concourse of people to
the new cemetery there to rest till
Christ shall call them forth to the final
glory.
The services were conducted by
Rev. A. H. Nickell, pastor of the Baptist
church, who spoke comforting
words to the bereaved family 'and
friends. The life of the departed had
been an open book to the people of
Oelwein and vicinity where the greater
part of his life was passed. In the
silent city of the dead near where
he has, lived and gone in and out
among his relatives and neighbors he
sleeps.
