ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES AWAY

For some months past John Hockings a resident of
South Frederick Street, has been in very poor health
and gradually growing weaker, and at 5:15 Friday
afternoon his spirit took its flight to try the realities
of endless days in the world above. Deceased was
born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England on the
23rd day of November, 1825, being at the time of
his death past his 72nd birthday. He came to this
country with his parents in 1844, settling near
Burlington, Wisconsin. On Christmas day 1847, he
was married to Miss Jane Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Hockings
came to Iowa in 1856, and settled on section 20
Jefferson township, where he devoted his energy to
farming until 1885, when he removed to Oelwein. He
leaves seven children, Mrs. N. W. Baldwin of Custer Co.,
Nebraska; Mrs. E. M. Conant, Hancock, Wisconsin;
Mrs. M. Brown, Mrs. E. A. Yarwood, Clarence and Albert
of Oelwein and A. L. of West Union, together with a
faithful wife and a large circle of friends to mourn his
loss. He was quiet and unassuming in all his ways, yet
won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact
during his many years residence in the city and vicinity.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist church
Sunday afternoon at 10:30, being largely attended by
old neighbors and friends, thus testifying to the esteem
in which he was held. The remains were laid to rest in the
Oelwein cemetery.
