Jane Jones was born in Shrewsbury, England, July 8, 1830.
She came to America with her parents when fourteen years
of age. They came across the mountains in that early day
and settled in Wisconsin. December 25, 1854 she was
married to John William Hockings. After residing a few
years in Wisconsin, Mr. and Mrs. Hockings decided to move
farther west and in 1856 they located in a log cabin one and
a half miles west of where Oelwein now stands, but at that
date this city was not even dreamed of.
On this they remained and reared a large family, until
twenty years ago they moved to Oelwein, taking up their
residence in the house that has been known as their home.
Twelve years ago her husband preceeded her into the summer
land and Grandma Hockings, one of the early pioneers, passed to
her rest Monday, November 14. The children who mourn
the loss of a good mother are Mrs. Fanny Baldwin, Oconto,
Nebraska; Mrs. Emily Conant, Hancock, Wisconsin; Albert Hockings
Oelwein; Clarence Hockings, Maynard; Alfred Hockings, Oelwein;
Mrs. M. Brown, Oelwein; Mrs. Phoebe Yarwood, Mankato, Minnesota;
Mary the first child died in infancy. Two sisters remain to mourn
her loss --- Mrs. Elizabeth Robertson, San Jose, California and Mrs.
Susan Crowell, Oelwein. There are also 21 grandchildren and 11
great grandchildren.
The last services were held from the Baptist church Thursday after-
noon. Rev. F. Y. Nichols officiating and all that is mortal of the
christian wife and mother was placed beside her husband in the
embrace of mother earth.
