Ella Nora Whittenbaugh, 92, of Wadena, Iowa, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at Lutheran Homes in Muscatine following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Wadena Presbyterian Church, Wadena, with Pastor Rusty Phillips officiating.

Burial followed in the Wadena Cemetery, Wadena.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Creamtion Service of Elgin was in charge of arrangements.

Ella Nora (Patterson) Whittenbaugh was born May 28, 1917, in Volga, to Floyd and Hattie (Kerr) Patterson.

She graduated from Wadena High School in 1935 and later received her teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University. She taught country school for two years.

On Dec. 27, 1937, Ella was united in marriage with Faye Whittenbaugh in Decorah. Two children were born to this union.

Ella was a substitute teacher for eight years in Wadena. She also farmed with her husband for 60 years.

She loved children, nature, doing handiwork, visiting friends and family, and she was a great cook.

Ella was a lifelong member of Wadena Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Faye; two brothers, Lyle Patterson and Floyd Patterson Jr.

Suvivors include Ella's two children, Terry (Connie) Whittenbaugh of McGregor and Connie (the Rev. Tom) Zeleny of Wilton; two grandchildren, Amy (Tony) Salaemi of McHenry Ill., and Chad (Krystal) Zeleny of Mt. Pleasant; four great-grandchildren, Joseph and Christopher Salemi, Derek and Samantha Zeleny; a stepgreat-grandchild, Reece Coffman; two sisters, Alo (Bill) Yearous of Elgin and Darlene (Louis) Halverson of Stoughton, Wis.; a brother, Dale (Beverly) Patterson of West Union; many nieces and nephews.
