OAKWOOD – Arlo Jacob Raim of Oakwood, died Friday (Aug. 20, 2010) in DuPage County, Ill., while conducting research on birds.

He was born on July 14, 1943, to Emil and Hazel (Spies) Raim, in West Union, Iowa. He was raised on a farm in northeast Iowa and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union.

Arlo graduated from West Union High School in 1961, earned a B.S. degree at Wartburg College in 1965 and an M.S. degree at Western Michigan, Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1967.

Prior to 1971, Arlo began his Brown-headed Cowbird research at the University of Arkansas. In 1971, Arlo continued his cowbird research as a Ph.D. student at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

From that time until the present, he participated in various ecological research projects at the University of Illinois and Illinois Natural History Survey.

One research project that Arlo was noteworthy for, following the onset of West Nile virus in Illinois, was finding that crows changed roosts every two days - something that no one before had ever found.

During Arlo's various trips to Panama, Mexico, Canada, Greenland and the U.S. he logged hundreds of thousands of miles tracking birds and other animals. He was a tireless worker who was completely committed to his job and therefore had a deep understanding of the behavior of wildlife (especially birds).

Arlo had an extraordinary love of animals, often rescuing stray dogs and taking injured wild animals and birds to veterinarians, paying for their care himself.

He is survived by a brother, Lorence and Verla Raim of Cedaredge, Colo.; a niece, Jodi Wright (Larry) Clever; children, Lora and Blake of Missouri; a nephew, Kent Raim of Sunray, Texas; and his avian research family.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at the Illinois Natural History Survey, 1816 S. Oak St., Champaign. Following the service, a potluck will be held.

Donations may be made to the Champaign County Humane Society.
