Vernon E. Stepp, 89, of Kansasville, Wis., formerly of Fayette, Iowa, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Wheaton Franciscan All-Saints Hospital in Racine, Wis., after a long battle with emphysema.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 21, at Polnasek-Daniels Funeral Home in Union Grove, Wis., with Pastor James Keuch officiating.

Local services were held Saturday, Oct. 23, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Fayette, with the Rev. Jason Princer officiating. Burial was held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Fayette after the service.

Local arrangements were handled by Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette.

Vernon Ervin Stepp was born May 10, 1921, in Rochester, Minn., to the late Luther and Louise (Radatz) Stepp.

He married Martha Frances Hathaway on April 6, 1947, in Spokane, Wash. She preceded him in death on March 9, 2000.

Vernon served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He was a gold miner, and he owned and operated Stepp-A-Long Construction.

In addition to his wife, Martha, Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James.

Survivors include his children, James Stepp of Fairbanks, Alaska, Grant (Pamela) Stepp of Americus, Ga., Barbara (Michael) Plantamura of Union Grove, Wis., Chris (Debra) Stepp of Barnesville, Minn., and Paul (Cathy) Stepp of Yorkville, Wis.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Camillo Wood of Vinton; and other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Union Grove, Wis., or to the charity of the donor's choice.
