Funeral services for Grace J. Kerr, 90, of Elgin, Iowa, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Illyria Community Church in rural Elgin. The Rev. Rick Johnson officiated.

Burial followed in the Illyria Cemetery in rural Elgin.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin was in charge of arrangements.

Grace's death occurred Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Good Samaritan Center - West Union following a brief illness.

Grace Jane (Peters) Kerr was born Sept. 19, 1920, to Charles and Mabel Peters in what was called Lutra in Fayette County. The youngest of five children, she had one brother, Joseph Peters, and three sisters, Glennie (Peters) Howard, Stella (Peters) Becker, and Mary (Peters) Howard Nydegger.

In 1937 Grace married Lawrence Howard, and they became the parents of two children. Laverne died in infancy, and Colleen (now Mrs. Robert Vargason) lives in West Branch.

On Oct. 7, 1939, Grace married Robert Kerr of Illyria. To this union five children were born: Delores (Mrs. Harlo Meyer), now deceased; Robert Jr., now deceased; Karolyn Moritz of Eldorado; Lois Wickett of Clive; and William Kerr of Clermont.

Robert and Grace farmed near Elgin during which time Robert raised and showed Shorthorn cattle. They retired in 1979 and resided at Homestead Apartments in Elgin prior to Grace moving to Good Samaritan Society - West Union in March 2007.

One of the most enjoyable events for Grace took place in October 1989, when she and Robert celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Robert passed away in December 1989.

In addition to her son Laverne Howard, and her husband Robert Kerr, Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mabel Peters; a daughter, Delores Meyer; a son, Robert Kerr Jr.; a grandson, Stacey Murphy; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Moritz and Catherine Messmore; a brother, Joseph Peters; three sisters, Glennie (Peters) Howard, Stella (Peters) Becker, Mary (Peters) Howard Nydegger; a son-in-law, Larry Wickett; and a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Kerr.

Grace is survived by a son, William (Yvonne) Kerr of Clermont; three daughters, Colleen (Robert) Vargason of West Branch; Karolyn Moritz and her significant other, Garry Schott, of Eldorado; Lois Wickett and her significant other, Richard Odenbach, of Clive; a son-in-law, Harlo Meyer of Sac City; 19 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren.
