Funeral services for Pauline M. Howard, 92, of West Union, Iowa, formerly of Alpha, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at United Methodist Church in West Union. The officiant was the Rev. Scott Keele Kober.

Committal services were conducted at the Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin.

The Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Homes in West Union were in charge of arrangements.

Pauline's death occurred Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Society - West Union.

Pauline Maxine Howard, daughter of Edward and Wilma (Green) Boleyn, was born Aug. 18, 1918, in Elgin.

On Dec. 1, 1934, she was united in marriage with William "Sam" Howard in West Union. The couple spent over 40 years living in Alpha. In 1980 they retired and moved to West Union.

Pauline helped with the farm work in the early years of their marriage. She also worked for the Elgin Canning Factory and spent time working as a sales clerk. For many years, Pauline worked at Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, helping in the housekeeping department.

A lifelong member of United Methodist Church in Alpha, Pauline enjoyed serving in the Methodist Booster Club.

She was very active in the Waucoma American Legion Auxiliary, as well, serving as a past president. She enjoyed spending her free time helping raise money for U.S veterans by selling poppies and rugs.

For years Pauline helped prepare the "wild game feed" in Hawkeye and Waucoma.

She enjoyed baking and making crafts, then sharing these items with others.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam; a son, Leo Howard; a son-in-law, Kenny Sweet; a brother, Gerald Boleyn; three sisters, Dorothy Jones, Ula Asmus and Vonda Fehlahafer; a great-granddaughter, Brandy Ratliff; a great-grandson, Clay Rummel; a great-great-great-grandson, Kilex McDaniel; and a granddaughter-in-law, Wanda Ford.

Surviving are three daughters, Georgianna Sweet of Ryan, Linda (Delbert Sr.) Potter of Oelwein, and Dorla (special friend Delbert Suckow) of Postville; a sister Ruth Stephany of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Howard of Hazleton; and a brother-in-law, Edward Fehlahafer of Lanark, Ill.

She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
