Archibald Frank McLeish, the
son of Andrew and Catherine
Strawn McLeish, was born Oct. 9,
1885 on a farm three miles south
of Maynard. He attended a rural
school and grew up on the farm.
He started farming on his own
across the road from the place
where he was born. A life-long
farmer, he raised Jersey cattle.
He was married to Lila Bennett
in 1907. They had three sons and
three daughters. She died
December 13, 1942.
He was married to Inez Day
Irwin March 21, 1945 at Oelwein.
The couple made their home on
the McLeish farm and continued
to live there at his retirement in
1959. At that time he had suffered
a stroke, but he was able to improve
and live at the farm home
for six more years.
Then on January 21, 1966 he
suffered another stroke and was
hospitalized. On April 7 of that
year he became a resident of the
Grandview Nursing Center in
Oelwein. There he was bedfast
and under the daily attention and
care of his wife, Inez. He died
Thursday, April 6, 1972 at Grandview.
McLeish was a charter
member of the Farm Bureau. He
was also a member of Grace
United Methodist Church in
Oelwein, where he attended the
services regularly as long as he
was able.
He is survived by his wife, Inez
of Oelwein, three sons Andrew
McLeish of Fayette, Charles
McLeish of Hawkeye, Elmer
McLeish of Oelwein; two
daughters: Vernetta, Mrs. Anthony
Gerstenberger of Oelwein:
and Margaret, Mrs. Fred
Hughson of Oelwein, nineteen
grandchildren and twenty-seven
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
his parents, his first wife, Lila,
one daugher, Viola, Mrs. Art
Wood, two sisters and five
brothers.
