Clara Schmitt

Clara Schmitt, 91, of St. Lucas, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Home in West Union, after a long illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m., at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas, with burial in the St. Luke's Cemetery.

The Burnham-Wood Funeral Home of West Union handled arrangements.

Clara (Kuennen) Schmitt was born March 6, 1907, the daughter of John W. and Katherine (Croatt) Kuennen.

She attended school at St. Luke's Catholic School in St. Lucas. Clara married Conrad Schmitt May 18, 1926, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas.

They farmed all their married lives near St. Lucas, retiring to West Union in 1977.

Clara enjoyed card playing, gardening and flowers.

Survivors include three sons, John and Shirley Schmitt of Ossian, Luke and Darlyn Schmitt of Waucoma, and Sam and Janice Schmitt of Waucoma; one daughter-in-law, Marvelene Schmitt of Waucoma; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Kuennen of Lawler and Al Kuennen of St. Lucas; and two sisters, Minnie Kuehner of St. Lucas and Eleanor Huber of Fort Atkinson.

Clara Schmitt was preceded in death by her husband Conrad, who died March 10, 1998; her parents; one son, Ernie, who died July 10, 1990; one brother, Victor Kuennen; and two sisters, Nettie Schmitt and Linda Martin.
