Independence teenager traffic victim
BRANDON — One teenager from Independence was killed and three others injured Tuesday night in a one-car crash on Iowa 283 near this Buchanan County community.
Judy Jensen, 15, was killed outright when the car went out of control, flipped over and landed on its wheel?, in a ditch.
The driver, Kendall Gahring, 18, was in critical condition at University Hospitals in Iowa City, where he was transferred by helicopter.
Two other passengers were hospitalized in Independence at People's Memorial Hospital. They are Brenda Eschen, 15, Independence, who suffered leg injuries and Jerald Meyers, 19, Independence, who, according to authorities, suffered head and neck injuries. Their condition was reported as fair.
The 1965 Ford Mustang driven by Gahring was determined a total loss. Charges are pending, Buchanan County Sheriffs office reports.
Miss Jensen was a sophomore student at Independence High School.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at White Funeral Home.
Survivors are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Jensen; two sisters, Cindi and Kristin; two brothers, Jeffrey and Michael, all at home; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mabel Miller of Independence; paternal grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. Elmer Jensen of Independence; and paternal great grandmother, Mrs. Mae Jensen of Edgewood.
