Bill Broughton

Murray William "Bill" Broughton, 83, of West Union, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center there, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, at 1:30 p.m., at the Bethel United Presbyterian Church in West Union, with the Rev. Carl Stoldt officiating.

Sue Updegraff will be the organist. John O. Falb, soloist, will sing "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers will be Ken Miller, Jim Hauer, Don Wagner, Gordon Pape, Steve Sindelar and Newell Mclntyre.

Interment will be at the Wadena Cemetery. The French Funeral Home of Calmar is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held one hour before services at the church.

Bill was born Nov. 6, 1915, in Wadena, the son of Harry and Alta (Whittenbaugh) Broughton. He attended school in Wadena and then graduated from West Union High School in 1933.

Bill married Virginia Madson May 29, 1939, in Pappillion, Neb.

He worked for the Fayette County Road Department from 1943-79, with the exception of a few years that he worked for Upham Construction, 1949-50.
Bill also owned and operated Bill's Sport Shop from 1969-81, a sporting goods and chain saw business.

He was a member of the Bethel United Presbyterian Church and the West Union Masonic Lodge No. 69, for over 50 years, where he served as past master several times and was district lecturer for the state of Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Broughton of West Union; three sons, Charles W. and Charlotte Broughton of Calmar, Don H. Broughton of Battle Mountain, Nev., and David M. Broughton of Battle Mountain, Nev.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen Main of Orland, Calif., Joan Penne of Waterloo, and Virginia and John Pratt of Waterloo.

Bill Broughton was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter-law, Georgia Broughton; three sisters, Margaret, Dorothy and Mary; and three brothers, Jay, Walter and Dale.
