Kenneth Dale Powers, 89, of Oelwein, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein.

Private graveside services will be conducted. Visitation is from 11 a.m., to 1 p.m., on Monday, July 12, at the Geilenfeld Funeral Chapel in Oelwein. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein.

He was born April 25, 1921 in Oelwein, the son of Arnold James and Lillius Rose (Cocum) Powers. He attended Oelwein High School and joined the U. S. Army right after school. He married Shirley J. Swarts on March 21, 1948 in Oelwein. He worked for Chicago Great Western as a fireman and later an engineer.

He is survived by a son Jim Powers of Seattle, Wash.; four-grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas, Candace and Courtney; two - great grandchildren, River Powers and Madeline Moore; two sisters, Dorothy Torson, Oelwein and Juanita Floden, Mt. Vernon and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Powers of Red Oak, Tx.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Oct. 15, 2008); a son, Donald (1989); a granddaughter, Amy Powers; a brother, Donald James Powers in WWII and his parents. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
