Dale W. Hackett, 83, of Anamosa, Iowa, died Monday July 12, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be 10:30 Thursday, July 15, at the United Methodist Church, Anamosa with interment in the Riverside Cemetery with military honors by the Anamosa Veterans. The Rev. Laurie Riley will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 8 Wednesday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa where a Masonic service will be held at 7:00.

Surviving is his wife, Joan, three children, Christine (Greg) Jensen, Hamlin, D. Kim Hackett, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Greg (Kelly) Hackett, Jefferson, S.C., four grandchildren, Katie and Molly Jensen, Drew Hackett and (fiancée Abby Jons), Skylar Hackett, one sister, Marjorie (Ken) Klink, West Branch, a brother Robert (Fran) Hackett, Salem and a brother-in-law, T. Nick (Nancy) Toutsch, Maquoketa. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Roy and sister Dorothy.

Dale W. Hackett was born Oct. 3, 1926 at West Union, Iowa. He was the son of Gordon and Bernice (Older) Hackett. Dale graduated from Fayette High School with the class of 1944. He went on to serve in the United States Army during WWII. Dale served in the Pacific Theater and later at the Pentagon before he was discharged in 1949. Dale continued his education at Upper Iowa University at Fayette graduating in 1951. Dale Hackett and V. Joan Toutsch were married May 30, 1951 at Fayette. Dale's first teaching position was at Arlington. He started working toward his Masters Degree in elementary education at the University of Iowa in 1952. He completed his degree in 1955. Dale taught from 1955 until 1959 at Polk Elementary in Cedar Rapids. He came to Anamosa in 1959 and was the kindergarten through eighth grade principal and later the kindergarten through sixth grade principal. He wore many hats during his tenure and had students and staff in as many as five separate buildings at the same time. Dale retired from the Anamosa Community Schools in June of 1989.

Dale was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Anamosa Masonic Lodge, where he was the treasurer of the Blue Lodge and the secretary of Knights Templar. He was a very active member of the Anamosa Rotary Club since 1963 serving as an officer for many years. He also served on the Senior Housing Board, as Board member and secretary, served on the R.S.V.P. Board, has been an Ambassador for the Anamosa Chamber of Commerce and is a lifetime member of both I.S.E.A. and the N.E.A. (educational organizations). Dale was also proud of his many years of association with the American Legion. In his spare time he enjoyed a good game of cribbage with his friends Joe and Chuck or a game of bridge with Patty, Laurie and his wife Joan. He also enjoyed a great book and the many hours he spent working projects on his computer.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Family encourages memorials be given to the Anamosa United Methodist Church.
