Burdette O. Ackman, 91, of Arlington, Iowa, died on Friday afternoon, July 9, 2010 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 13, at the Arlington United Methodist Church in Arlington; Officiating: Pastor Lisa Schroeder. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m., today, Monday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington, and after 9:30 a.m., on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at Taylorsville Cemetery at Arlington, with graveside military rites by the Dean Harkin American Legion Post # 219 of Arlington.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of Waterloo.

Burdette Otto Ackman was born on Sept. 4, 1918 at Wood Center, the son of Earnest and Anna (Stetter) Ackman. He graduated from Arlington High School at Arlington, in 1936. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army. Burdette married Dorothy Elaine Mitchell on March 12, 1946 at Perry. He farmed in the Arlington area, was a school bus driver for 21 years for the Arlington Public School and the Central Community School in Elkader, and drove a tank wagon for the Arlington Coop for 19 years, retiring in 1981. Burdette was a longtime member of the Arlington United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Dean Harkin American Post # 219 of Arlington. Burdette was also on the Fayette County Commission of Veterans Affairs.

Burdette is survived by a daughter, Barb (Harry) Nolda of Strawberry Point; three grandchilden, Nancy (Kevin) Meyer of Knoxville, Becky (Joe) Helle of Hiawatha, and David Squires (Nichole Peterson) of Manchester; and six great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Meyer, Trevor Meyer, Grant Helle, Coby Meyer, Blake Helle, and Savannah Squires. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothy E., Aug. 26, 2000.
