Elmer "Elmo" Heller, 77, of Clermont, Iowa, formerly of Washburn, died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at his home following a short illness.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, at West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont with the Rev. Dwight Albers officiating.

Burial with military rites was held at the Garden of Memories, Waterloo.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Clermont handled the arrangements.

Elmer Heller was born Aug. 3, 1932, in rural Fayette County to Walter and Lydia (Herman) Heller.

He graduated from Sumner High School, Sumner, with the class of 1951.

Following high school, Elmer worked for Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo.

In 1952, he entered the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean Conflict. Elmer was later honorably discharged in 1955.

He resumed employment with Rath Packing Co. and continued working there until the company closed. Elmer then worked for Target until his retirement in 1997.

On July 22, 1956, Elmer was united in marriage with Nancy Pape at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Clermont. Four children were born to this union.

Elmer and Nancy raised their family in Washburn and resided there until moving to Clermont in 2001.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Elmer also enjoyed mushroom hunting, making horseradish, collecting stamps and coins, and visiting friends at the local pubs. He was a member of the Iowa Archeology Society for 48 years and a member of the Moose Lodge in Washburn.

Elmer will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lawrence Heller.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Heller of Clermont; four children, Michael (Mary) Heller of Clermont, Patrick (Kayla Stevenson) Heller of Cedar Rapids, Ilene (Allan) Rosauer of Cedar Falls, Timothy (Gwendy Julien) Heller of West Union.

Additional survivors include nine grandchildren, Lisa (Matt) Ellis, Nicole (Nathan) Judnic, Joshua (fiancé Amber Anderstrom) Heller, Amanda Heller, Amber Heller, Seth Heller, Aubrey Heller, Jesse Heller, and Anthony Heller; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Ellis, Braeden Ellis, Isabella Judnic, Madison Varney; and a sister, Idena (Marvin) Meyer of Sumner.
