Funeral services for Irene M. Russler, 90, of West Union, Iowa, were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union. Officiants were the Rev. David Grant and the Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson.
Providing music were pianist Brittany More and soloist Doug Poppen.
Burial was in the West Union Cemetery. Casket bearers were Tim Russler, Trent Russler, Carl Wagner Jr., Ben Henniges, Bruce Henniges and Brian Henniges.
Honorary bearers were Amanda Miskowic, Brett Russler, Paige Russler, Paula Niver and Kristen Russler.
Irene's death from age-related causes occurred Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union.
Arrangements were handled by Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union.
Born Sept. 18, 1919, in West Union, Irene Mae (Fels) Russler was the daughter of Carl and Rosina (Wolfe) Fels.
After her graduation from West Union High School in 1937, Irene taught school in Postville and in the Dover Township schools.
In July 1941, Irene was united in marriage with Howard Russler on her parents' farm. The couple lived in Hawkeye before moving in 1955 to West Union, where Howard built several homes with Irene's assistance.
She enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family.
Irene loved spending time with her sisters. One of her favorite things to do was to go to the Town House for coffee to visit with her sisters and her friends.
She was active in Zion Lutheran Church.
After Howard died in 1996, Irene continued to live in her own home until 2006, when she became a resident of Maple Crest Manor, Fayette.
In addition to her husband, Howard, Irene was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charles Fels.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Karen (Don) Henniges of Denver, Ia.; Dennis (Kathy) Russler of Burnsville, Minn., David (Donna) Russler of Henderson, Nev., and Terry (Paula) Russler of West Union; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Fels of West Union; and two sisters, Vera (Carl Sr.) Wagner and Delores (Jim) Friederich, both of West Union; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
